Traffic snarl ups

It is so sad for Nairobi to be ranked as the fourth most grueling commute of 20 cities surveyed in a new IBM international traffic study. According to the report, Nairobi and Moscow topped the list of cities that host the world’s longest traffic jams — 2.1 hours — which is 40 per cent higher than the survey’s average of 1.3 hours.

Traffic jams have become a permanent feature on Nairobi roads even as the city looks forward to the completion of major roads and bypasses to ease flow.

Calculate how many hours are those wasted in traffic, tell me how many hours we have to sleep before the alarm goes on reminding us that it is a brand new day? This kind of lifestyle affects the labor input as some of the workforce will not have taken good rest for the day. The traffic snarl ups also lead to increase in bus fare, and unless and employer is ready to cushion their employer, then we are in a real mess.

What would be your ideal solutions to curb the growing traffic jam, notably in major towns like Nairobi? Share your ideas.
